Hi friends,

It’s been a while since I don’t show up here. All things are well, I just have been spending a lot of my time drawing and painting lately and all my undone furniture pieces are patiently waiting until I get back to them.

As I was working on my latest batch of colorful pieces earlier this year, I made the mistake of not recording the process in any of them, so I don’t have new material. However, I recently found the videos clips I recorded as I painted one of my most popular pieces last year, which was this amazing buffet I found on Facebook Marketplace for a bargain.

I finally overcame procrastination and finished editing and publishing the  video, and prepared this blog post for you. I hope you enjoy it. Click on the image below to watch it.

I called this technique “layering”, although if you google it, you may find how other artists approach that technique in totally different ways. It doesn’t matter, if you want to call it different, feel free to do so!

Here is the list of supplies I used to paint the blue/purple area and hardware of this buffet. Most of them have affiliate links*.

• Zinsser Clear Shellac
• General Finishes Milk Paint Coastal Blue
• General Finishes Milk Paint Royal Purple
• Good Quality Paint Brush
• Chip brushes
• General Finishes Pitch Black Glaze
• Baby wipes
• General Finishes Water-Based Top Coat
• Art Alchemy Metallique Wax – Aged Brass
• Water

By now you now the drill. I started by light sanding, cleaning and priming my piece with clear shellac. Next I brushed a base coat of General Finishes Royal Purple using a good quality brush to minimize brush strokes.

I then applied a thin, very watery coat of General Finishes Coastal Blue (my favorite color in the world!). Notice that for this coat, all my brush strokes were vertical, because that was the look I was going for.

After both coats were dry, I applied the black glaze using a chip brush, then immediately wiped off the excess with baby wipes. Remember, for this part you have to work one small section at a time, as the glaze dries quickly.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

To smooth everything out, I brushed the glazed areas with a very wet brush. This time I used a chip brush because I wanted some texture.

I made some final adjustments in colors using a chip brush to add blue or purple to a few areas. Check out the video to see how I did that.

I sealed everything with clear top coat. I like to use my spray for that part, but you can also use a foam brush. Just make sure you piece is completely dry before you brush or you will mess up the glaze. Maybe wait two or three days to be on the safe side.

With an old artist brush, I applied this gorgeous metallic wax to the hardware and also to the legs. Remember not to apply top coat over wax or you you make a big hot mess on your painted piece. Seal first, then apply your decorative wax!
