Hi friends,
This is a short post to show you how I painted this cabinet.
We are redecorating our fireplace room, which we have now started calling “the studio”. Although it is not ready yet, it’s already my favorite room in the house, and the place where my boys and I spend most of our time when we are home. The reason? It is where we placed our desks. My boys do their homework and play their online games here and I paint my watercolors and use my computer here too.
We needed a small cabinet to hide the ugly papers, envelopes and binders that were cluttering our pretty desks, so when I saw this ugly cabinet at our local Restore, I decided it was the right one to do the job. It is not real wood and it couldn’t be uglier, but it costed $15 and had the right size and functionality, so I brought it home.
How ugly was that, right?

This is how I painted it. (This post contain a few affiliate links).
- I stared by removing the casters, and hardware and spray painting them gold using Rust-Oleum Bright Coat .
- I also removed the old handles and filled the original holes and the doors slits with Bondo Wood Filler
.
- Next I sanded the filled areas and the entire piece until the surface was super smooth.
- I then primed the piece with one coat of Clear Shellac Spray. You could also use any oil-based primer you have at hand for this step.
- When the shellac was dry, I sprayed two coats of Fusion Mineral Paint Homestead Blue
.
- Finally I sprayed three coats of General Finishes Water Based Topcoat Satin
.
I drilled holes in the center of the doors where I wanted to install the new pretty handles I got for this piece.
Ant that was all! What a difference, right?

Thank you!
Beautiful, Pat! Doesn’t even look like the same piece!
I just LOVE this color. Seriously, I have versions of it around my home and in my craft fair products. Wonderful color choice! I watched your video and now I’m thinking I should invest in a paint sprayer. Makes painting a breeze!
Thank you Audra! I love all shades of blue. This one is particularly beautiful, right? I have a few tips on paint sprayers so feel free to ask me questions before you invest.
This looks amazing! Pinned! Thanks for sharing in the To Grandma’s House We Go DIY, Crafts, Recipes and More Link party. Hope to see you again next week!
Thank you Sheri!
Pat that is such a gorgeous color, something between a gray and a blue. I have been eyeing it for quite some time and now seeing how your boring cabinet has been transformed I am definitely going to use it. I think it also looks great paired with natural wood.
Thanks Mary! I’d love to se one of your pieces in a beautiful blue. It’s so hard to pick a shade. But you can’t go wrong with blue.
Holy cow! I’m never passing up a super dated piece again! It looks gorgeous – and I love that color!!
Haha! It was bad right?! Yes, nothing like some love and a few coats of paint.
Wow, you have real vision. I see carts like that all the time and I would never think it could be so beautiful!
Thanks Kim! The miracle of paint 🙂
The cupboard looks fantastic, the spray paint has given it a lovely finish.
It has right? Thank you, Claire!
