This is an example of a very simple project that makes a great difference in a room decoration.
My client wanted to add some life to her little daughter bedroom. There was nothing wrong with this beautiful chest of drawers. It belonged to her husband when he was a kid, and it was in pristine condition. And yet, it didn’t add any joy to the space.
Here is the picture she sent me.
Nothing like adding a bit of color solve the problem. We went back and forth with some inspiration pictures from the Internet and she decided to go with mint, and I was very excited about it, since I’ve always wanted to paint a piece in that color.
She also decided to change the drawer knobs and chose some very cute rustic-brass ring pulls.
Here is how it looks now.

Here is what I needed for this project (this post contains some affiliate links).
Preparation and Painting Supplies:
- Liquid Sander – Deglosser
- TSP
diluted in water for cleaning
- Rust-Oleum White Primer
(3 cans)
- Valspar Paint, Mint Mist, satin
- Minwax Polycrylic, Satin
diluted in water for cleaning
(3 cans)
Tools:
- Paint Sprayer
(for paint and sealer)
- Purdy Paint Brush
(to paint drawer sides)
- Respirator
(very important, especially if you will spray your piece)

How I did it…
First I removed the original knobs.
Next I cleaned the entire dresser with TSP diluted in water.
Since the wood was in perfect condition, I skipped sanding, and applied deglosser using paper towel, just to remove a bit of the previous finish and improve paint adherence.
Then I removed all the deglosser by cleaning everything again with TSP/water.
Next sprayed the white primer and as soon it was dry, I applied two coats of paint using my paint sprayer.
In order to avoid getting paint inside the dresser and drawers, I spray dressers and chests with all the drawers on and completely shut. I then use my paint brushes to paint the sides of the drawers that I couldn’t reach with the spray. I find it easier and faster than taping and covering the inside of the dresser to avoid overspray.
When the paint was completely dry, I applied to coats of Polycrilic, satin.
Finally I put on the new ring pulls.
And that was all! What a difference!

I’m so enjoying all these projects. I did my own version of that desk you did with the Java gel stained top, Modern Masters metallics, teal drawer interiors and mercury glass pulls. Mine was an old, marred sewing cabinet. I left the inside top with original threads and spools intact, and instead of tinted glaze and spray satin at the end, I used Tudor Brown Briwax. Otherwise I copied what you did (imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, they say). Following your steps and product suggestions it turned out so well. Thank you! I’m already getting lots of compliments on it and have shown your blog and shared where I got the inspiration with others. Anyway, I’ve saved so many of your ideas. They’re just beautiful. Your guidance on prep work and clear instructions sure makes a difference, and (because I’ve seen many a tacky or “heavy-handed” makeover) I love the subtle touch you have with these projects. This bureau is simply sweet, the Tardis is smashingly fun ;), the navy and gold MCM dresser is so sharp, the coffee bar beautiful and unique, the…… Seriously, so many lovely pieces. My first project was as close to copying yours as I could do. I’m ready to start a second and will try to be a bit more brave and get inspiration from your blog while branching out a bit with my own ideas.
