My neighbor had this little cabinet stored in her garage for a long time. It has been in her family for many years and she just couldn’t part with it. However, as you can see from the “before” picture, it was no longer in usable condition. Finally one day as we walked our dogs, she told me she was ready to have it refinished.
I initially thought she would just ask me to repaint it white, but fortunately she was open to color suggestions. As you can imagine, repainting a piece of furniture in its original color is not very exciting.
I usually send my customers some inspiration pictures I save on my Pinterest boards, so I emailed her a few examples I thought would look nice and she immediately wrote me back to say she was in love with the ones in bright colors. Her choices were dark gray and bright yellow. I loved the combo!
This cabinet took A LOT of preparation. It was stripped, sanded, and cleaned many times, before I could finally get to the painting part.
This is what I used.
Primer: Rustoleum spray – white on the inside and gray on the outside
Inside color: Benjamin Moore Bright Yellow
Outside color: Benjamin Moore Nightfall
Sealed with Minwax Polycrylic Satin.
Drawers: Sealed with Miss Mustard Seed Hemp Oil.
Let me know what you think!
Thanks for reading!
Patricia.
Looks great. Love to see your work!

Barbara, you are on the right track! Start with a small piece in a simple finish just to see how it goes.
That’s exactly how I started. I was inspired by some bloggers who shared how they painted their pieces and I also searched video tutorials on YouTube. You can learn anything online these days.
Have fun with your projects!

Wow Pat! This is super cool. I’m so glad the lady decided to go with the bold colors. It really makes the cabinet stand out. All the geometric forms and the details are readily visible now. You did an amazing job! It kind of reminds me of late 60’s pop art era!

I’m fan of geometric forms and the 60’s pop art too. Thanks for the compliment, Mary!
