I don’t do many hutches. They are very time and resource consuming so prices are not as affordable as dressers and smaller pieces. As a result, customers don’t usually order them and even though it’s not hard to find beautiful ones for sale at a very low price, I simply don’t have space to paint one then keep it in my house for several months until a buyer falls in love with it despite the price.
This one was a custom order. It has been with this family for 16 years and is one of those beautiful, sturdy pieces from a high-end furniture store that costed a fortune back when they bought it, so getting rid of it was not an option. The hutch’s structure was in like-new condition, but it was time for a fresh look, and I was the lucky lady to get the job!
Over all, the painting process went well, but when it was time to seal it, something very annoying happened. I applied polyurethane over the black areas because I wanted a tough, durable sealer but, strangely, even after 24 hours after I sealed it, the whole black surface was still sticky and would attract every single piece of lint and dust that came close to it. Wiping and dusting only made things worse. Ugh! I would have to paint it all over again!!!!
Off I went to Lowes, determined to find and pay whatever the price was for the-best-of-the-world black paint that would not require any sealer, as I was not going to take any chances the second time around. It turns out such paint does exist, and now that I found out about it, I am thankful my project didn’t work out the first time.
This is the miracle paint.
This thing checks all boxes! I’m still trying to think of any drawbacks because it is too good to be true.
- No primer needed (though I always prime my pieces due to traumatizing bleeding experiences in the past)
- No sealing needed
- Dries super quickly
- Beautiful smooth finish with a paint sprayer, foam roller and paintbrush (yes, I used all of them in this project)
- Ultra durable (it’s meant for interior and exterior)
- All Valspar colors to choose from
- Enriched with oil, BUT washable with soapy water (for real)
- Same price or cheaper than regular latex paint ($24 a quart)
- No smell at all
Well, maybe there is one little problem. I have to drive 30 minutes to Lowes to get it as my local hardware store doesn’t have it YET.

Very pretty! I love the black. I just saw that Valspar paint today at Lowe’s! I didn’t have time to stop and read the label but it did catch my interest. Great to hear that it’s good paint. I guess it went over the sticky paint and all was well?

Nice work! I’m intrigued by this new furniture paint from Lowes. I’ll be looking for it next time I’m at their store. From the way you described it, it kinds of sounds like an waterborne alkyd (?), similar to BM’s Advance?

Thanks Christina! I don’t know the answer to your question, and couldn’t find that information on the can either. I use BM regular latex paint a lot, but never tried BM’s Advance. I read your post a while ago about your breakup with BM and was a little discouraged to try. I love the high-gloss on your pieces (I’m a BIG fan of your work btw), but I don’t think this new line by Valspar has a gloss sheen. This one is satin, which is my favorite anyways, so I didn’t bother checking. I hope you try this one and share your opinion on your blog. I just bought another can in Ivory to paint a bedroom set and can’t wait to start. Let’s see how long my honeymoon with Vaspar FP will last.

Thank you, and thank you for the response! I have also had very good luck with BM’s regular latex (I think it was Aura?). Other painters have mentioned that BM’s Advance in a Satin finish is much easier to work with – just FYI in case you want to try it out. I will definitely give it a try and share any feedback on the blog. 🙂

Great! A quick note to say I used the paint again and had a few hiccups as I tried to use it with no primer and a sponge roller. It didn’t work so well, so I went back to the paint sprayer and it was all good and beautiful again!

Thanks Melissa! Tried the paint for a second time and have to admit it’s not so good without a primer and applied straight with a sponge roller. I used the paint sprayer again and got the same beautiful result as first time. So… not as perfect as I thought but I’ll still be using it 🙂

Great post, thank you! I just bought some of the Valspar FP for a set of dining chairs. The can says to not thin the product but I know I will need to thin for my sprayer to work well. I contacted Valspar customer service and asked them what to think with (water vs. paint thinner). They declined to answer and basically said don’t do it!
You said you sprayed parts of this project, did you think and if so with what? I take it you have had no long term issues with durability?

Yes, people at my hardware store also said I should not add water to it. I added it anyways and it worked fine for me in the black color. I did the same with a light color and the result was not so good. I’ll try to spray without thinning it next time to see how it works.
In terms of durability, it is the best product I’ve tried so far. I even painted the cabinets in my bathroom with it many months ago and it still looks new.
